NOTE: This class was originally scheduled on 10/12 but moved due to a conflict.

This is the most important and useful class of them all, as it will prepare you and your fellow officers to run your PTA with an eye toward the important legal and fiscal requirements in running a nonprofit. PTA and the Law deals with state and federal rules and regulations relevant to running a charitable, tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation in the state of Washington, and will explain how these rules impact your PTA. PTA and the Law is a required class for at least one elected officer per PTA each year.

LWPTSA Council presents a webinar: Learn About LWSD’s Active Assailant Protocols, on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 7:30 pm, via Zoom.

  • Various active assailant protocols with specific focus on the multi-option response protocol ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) used by LWSD
  • How multi-option preparedness is useful and consistent with other emergency preparedness responses
  • What ALICE is and is not
  • Why the term “drill” is problematic
  • 2024-2025 emergency procedure terminology changes and drill schedule
  • How parents can facilitate discussions on the topic
  • How to manage our fears of active threat situations

Participants will learn strategies for fostering positive and productive relationships with volunteers, board members and other adults who work with PTA in a variety of roles. All members of our school community are invited to join us for this month’s Lunch & Learn on “The Role of Technology in the Classroom,” with guest speakers Forrest Baker, LWSD Executive Director of Technology Services; Aubrey Dane, LWSD Technology Integration Specialist; and Jake Duke, LWSD Curriculum Specialist. Learn about how our students’ teachers are integrating technology in the curriculum, how device use differs from K-12, how our schools and parents can partner to be mindful of screen time in and out of the classroom, and more. LWPTSA Council’s Special Education Group’s (SEG) monthly meetings kick off at 6:30 pm with family networking. At 7 pm, we will begin our formal presentation. Ample time for discussion and Q&A will follow. 

On-site child care is available for LWSD students and school-aged siblings! Contact SpecialServices@LWSD.org no later than 3 business days prior to the meeting, with your student’s name and age.

LWPTSA Council’s Special Education Group (SEG) aims to connect and support families in the LWSD community with students who receive special services through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Accommodations Plan, or Individualized Health Plan (IHP). We host monthly meetings that start with time for families to connect with one another, followed by a formal presentation on topics relevant to the SEG community and an opportunity for member questions and input. We also support families and local PTA special education chairs through a lending library, information about resources available in our community, and updates on news relevant to the special education community.

Ilsa Govan, Co-Founder of Cultures Connecting, is a nationally recognized facilitator, consultant and social justice activist. A former Equity and Race Specialist for Seattle Public Schools, Ilsa has extensive experience addressing institutional racism. Her work includes an award-winning book exploring issues of privilege and racial justice.

Council’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee meets one Wednesday each month of the school year (with the exception of September and June) at 11:30 am. During the 2024-2025 year, meetings will be held online via Zoom.

DEI chairs and other interested leaders from PTAs and PTSAs in the Lake Washington School District are invited to these monthly meetings to discuss DEI issues and advocacy initiatives that impact our students and families.
