LWPTSA Council Special Education Group (SEG) Meeting @ LWSD Resource Center Board Room
Mar 19 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
All are invited to join LWPTSA Council’s Special Education Group (SEG) for a presentation on supporting your student to find intrinsic motivation! Our guest speaker, Sara Sanders Gardner (they/them), will be presenting about Motivation Theory, autonomy, mastery, relationships, purpose and application.
The meeting will kick off at 6:30 pm with family networking. At 7 pm, we will begin our formal presentation. Ample time for discussion and Q&A will follow.
On-site child care is available for LWSD students and school-aged siblings! Contact SpecialServices@LWSD.org by March 14 with your student’s name and age.

Meeting Resources:

Sara Sanders Gardner (they/them) is the openly autistic designer and director of Bellevue College’s nationally recognized Neurodiversity Navigators program (NdN), which serves 300+ students in tiered services. Sara leads a team of staff, faculty and peer mentors, designs curriculum, and works to support disability inclusion and accessibility across campus. Sara serves as co-chair of the College’s Council for Inclusion and Diversity, sits on the CARE Team, and is a Title IX Investigator. [Sara’s bio]

LWPTSA Council’s Special Education Group (SEG) aims to connect and support families in the LWSD community with students who receive special services through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Accommodations Plan, or Individualized Health Plan (IHP). We host monthly meetings that start with time for families to connect with one another, followed by a formal presentation on topics relevant to the SEG community and an opportunity for member questions and input. We also support families and local PTA special education chairs through a lending library, information about resources available in our community, and updates on news relevant to the special education community.

This month, our topic is Assistive Technology: Empowering Education.
Bring your student’s laptop with you to try out the tools alongside the presentation.
This presentation offers an introduction to various assistive technology (AT) tools available to students, empowering caregivers to support their student’s use of these resources. We’ll introduce you to Microsoft accessibility features, literacy support systems like Clicker 8 and WordQ5, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) techniques, and discuss how caregivers can leverage AI to enhance their understanding of educational topics. By familiarizing yourself with these tools, you’ll be better equipped to assist your student in their learning journey, promote their academic success, and contribute to a more inclusive educational environment where all students can thrive regardless of their individual needs.
