Making Your PTA More Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive (DEI)
PTA leaders gathered for this WSPTA approved training to share practical strategies for building more inclusive, welcoming communities. The conversation focused on reducing barriers to participation through approaches such as:
- Offering free events and PTA memberships
- Providing translation and interpretation support
- Creating sensory‑friendly spaces
- Alternating meeting times to increase access
- Using inclusive, welcoming language that reflects all families
Participants also explored how to assess DEI efforts using available tools, discussed challenges with accurately understanding community demographics, and emphasized the importance of strong partnerships with school administration. The group highlighted community listening sessions as a meaningful way to hear directly from families and move from integration toward true inclusion and belonging for all.
