LWPTSA Council’s Resource Guide for Heritage/Cultural/International Nights

Updated 12/31/23

Many PTSAs host annual heritage/cultural/international nights in an effort to celebrate their schools’ diversity. These events may involve tables sampling food and looking at artifacts, flags and maps.

LWPTSA Council has received questions inquiring about whether or not these events should continue to happen or be revamped. There has been feedback from administrators and families over concerns of tokenism, cultural appropriation and lack of inclusivity.

Currently, neither the National PTA or Washington State PTA website has any formally written guide material available. Please refer to this resource guide that LWPTSA Council has compiled as you consider your event programming:

In it you’ll find some helpful definitions, ideas and questions to discuss with your fellow PTSA members and leaders. Please contact our DEI chair if you have any questions.
