On March 24, 2025, LWPTSA Council, in partnership with Lindsey Yocum (LWSD School Board Director) and Amy Falcone (Kirkland City Councilmember), hosted an impactful Advocacy Skills in the Education System session focused on how families can advocate within the education system—with purpose, clarity and confidence. Purpose of the Series
To meet families where they are in their advocacy journey and equip them with the education, encouragement and empowerment needed to support all students—and inspire others to do the same.
What We Covered
LWSD Structure 101
Understanding how LWSD operates is step one in effective advocacy:
- Voters elect the school board.
- The school board hires and oversees the superintendent.
- The superintendent manages the district through a leadership cabinet.
School Board vs. Superintendent
Think of it like a restaurant:
- School Board = Owners (they set the vision and policies)
- Superintendent = Head Chef (runs operations, oversees staff)
- District Leaders = Managers (handle day-to-day operations)
- Knowing these roles helps families provide feedback to move the system forward.
Board Policies
- Results Policies define the board’s goals for students.
- Operational Expectation Policies define how the staff should operate to meet the goals set in the Results Policies.
- When you understand these policies, you can provide meaningful feedback to the board—because these policies are rooted in community values.
Work Plan + Accountability
The school board’s annual work plan lays out the board’s schedule for the year. Following it closely lets you:
- Know which topics will be discussed throughout the year
- When to provide feedback prior to board decisions
Advocating With District Staff
Learn who to go to and when:
- Start with your school leadership.
- Follow the organizational chart to escalate questions or concerns.
Takeaways
To advocate with the school board:
- Know board policies
- Follow the board annual work plan
To advocate with district staff:
- Follow the chain of communication
- Focus on clarity and respect
