Advocacy Tip: Send a Postcard to Your Legislators

You can help support our school district and PTAs in advocating for increased funding for schools in Washington. Here’s one way to do it:

1. Visit leg.wa.gov or use the QR code below to find the names and addresses of your Washington state legislators. Each district has two representatives and one senator.

2. Help your children to write a letter or draw a picture on a postcard for each of the three legislators representing your district. Or write the postcard yourself as a parent or guardian. Here are some ideas:

  • Talk about what you love about your school and why it should continue to be funded.
  • Talk about ways your school has been impacted by insufficient funding or about services that our district may need to reduce due to budget shortfalls.
  • Talk about the “Big 3” asks from our district: (1) funding for special education; (2) funding for materials, supplies and operations costs (MSOC), (3) and funding for transportation.
  • If you know your representative is supportive of increasing funding for schools, thank them for fighting for our students!

3. Attach a postcard stamp and drop your postcard in the mail by Feb 10 so that it will arrive ahead of our PTA Focus Day on Feb 17.  Or bring it with you to Focus Day and deliver it in person!

4. Need more postcards? Scan the QR code below to print your own (it makes two double-sided postcards; tell your printer you want two pages per sheet of paper) or contact the Lake Washington School District Print Center at LWSDprintrqst@lwsd.org and request an order of the postcards from Thoreau PTA.
